Whole Numbers: Youll begin by learning more about positive and negative numbers how to order large numbers, how to add and subtract them and how to work with negative numbers. Youll learn new ways to multiply and divide large numbers and the special rules that apply to multiples, factors and prime numbers. Youll explore ratios in calculations and how direct proportion can help in creating scale drawings and maps. And youll be shown how to use formulae to solve more complex calculations. Fractions, Decimals and Percentages: It begins by developing your knowledge of fractions. Youll learn how to compare fractions, and how to add and subtract fractions with the same or different denominators. Then we explores decimals and give you new techniques to add, subtract, multiply and divide them, both with and without a calculator. Finally, youll learn how to perform percentage calculations in everyday situations from working out how much discount youll get if a product is reduced by 30% to calculating how much VAT youll need to pay. Common
Measures: Youll learn how to convert
money between currencies and how to calculate journey times. Youll
be shown how to read metric/imperial conversion graphs and how to use
formulae to calculate the perimeter, area and volume of squares, rectangles
and cuboids, and youll explore the special rules and techniques
for calculating the circumference and area of circles. Handling
Data: We begin by explaining the important difference between discrete data and continuous data. Then youll learn how to interpret the information on more complex data display mechanisms such as two-way tables, dual bar charts and continuous bar charts. Youll be shown how to use a data capture sheet to collect information in an organised way and how to use a spreadsheet programme to display your findings. Finally, youll learn all about averages and the formulae you need to calculate mean, median, mode, range and frequency distribution.
