Vocabulary, Spelling and Grammar:
A good understanding of sentence structure, grammar and vocabulary is vital if we want to write correctly. We will help you to improve the key skills you need to get your message across in a clear and professional way.

You’ll learn to recognise the boundaries between sentences and be shown how to improve your writing by using connectives to join simple sentences. You’ll see why it’s important to use the correct form and tense of the verb if you want your writing to make sense and you’ll learn how proper punctuation can make your text even clearer. You’ll develop new skills to help you read unfamiliar or specialist words and techniques to help you spell longer words.

Writing:
Good planning skills are important if you want to get your message across clearly in a way that’s easily understood. We can help you to develop new skills and techniques to plan and organise your writing.

You’ll be shown how lists, spider diagrams, headed notes and flow charts can be used to plan your writing. You’ll see how paragraphs help your ideas flow in a logical order in longer pieces of writing. You’ll learn how to adapt your style of writing to suit both your purpose and your audience. And you’ll be shown how to proof-read your writing to check that it makes sense and to ensure that the spelling, punctuation and grammar is accurate.

Reading:
Every day we come across different types of texts, from simple washing instructions to more complicated letters from our mortgage lender. Allow us to show you how to analyse and evaluate texts, and how to work out how valid and relevant they are to you.

You’ll learn to identify the main points of a text and to understand why it was written and whether it’s relevant to you. You’ll be shown how to analyse texts to see whether they are made up of facts, opinions or both. You’ll look at persuasive texts and written arguments – you’ll see how they can present a one-sided argument or a balanced discussion and you’ll learn how to recognise the difference between the two! And you’ll have the chance to practise key reading skills like skimming, scanning, detailed reading and summarising.
